Community Connections
The church and its ancillary rooms and hall are used throughout the week both during the day and some evenings. Many and varied are those who come to the various functions;
Age UK hold regular lunch time gatherings for the elderly on a number of days, providing a lunch and entertainment in the hall.
Slimming World use the hall for a number of sessions during the week and have many visitors during the sessions.
Three years ago a complaint was posted on the Keynsham Community Facebook page bemoaning the lack of bereavement support for those in the town. A church member took up the challenge and gathering some volunteers around him launched Bereavement Support Keynsham, a free service, meeting twice a month. Each month they support some twenty bereaved people and each month there are new attendees to the ‘drop in’ session. Dorothy House Hospice, near Bath work closely with the group as a referral point (and as trainers for the volunteers,) as do all of the GP surgeries within Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) as referrers, as does the Registrar for B&NES as do a number of other mental health charities. Despite the name, the group receive guests from across B&NES and also from South Gloucestershire and parts of the City of Bristol.
There is a regular meeting in the sanctuary of Alcoholics Anonymous.
In a similar way there is a regular meeting of AlAnon which is a alcoholics support group.
Also, there is a group for adult children of alcoholics and dis-functional children.
The Repair Cafe’ uses the Sanctuary for regular sessions inviting the general public to bring along items that can or hopefully can be repaired and saved from the ‘recycling centre’.
The Sanctuary and ancillary rooms are filled twice a year with a craft faire open to the public.
Keynsham Town Council hold meetings at the church.
The hall is used as the ‘green room’ for the annual music festival held in the Memorial Park adjacent to the rear of the church. It is buzzing all day long.
Yoga classes have been held in the hall, as have children’s parties and kick boxing.
Social Services hold meetings in the church for their Family Placement services.
Adoption West and Greenpeace are two other groups of users.
Residents Association Meetings (Management) have been held and Avon Wildlife Trust deliver public monthly talks, re their work to an open audience.
The previous Member of Parliament held regular surgeries in one of the ancillary rooms whilst B&NES council Electoral services have used the church as a polling station.
Regular meetings of the town’s new resident’s group of Hong Kong ex residents, a number of whom are regular attendees at the church. They have come to this country to escape the Chinese regime and the political control.
Keynsham and District Talking Newspaper also holds its committee meetings in one of the ancillary rooms. They produce a spoken newspaper and magazine that is produced weekly from amongst some 100 volunteers and delivered to approximately 80 recipients who are blind or have restricted vision.
